Paws and Pages

HSSA Main Campus 635 W Roger Rd, Tucson, AZ, United States

The Paws and Pages Literacy Program aims to give children the opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of shelter pets while building confidence and improving reading skills. It has been observed by the APSCA that being read to helps fearful or shy dogs become more comfortable with people because there is no forced interaction. Here at HSSA, we will read to shy dogs and cats as well as sick dogs who are long term residents with limited human interaction. As exemplified by shelter literacy programs across the country, this reading program will encourage our shelter pets to approach the front of their kennels for potential adopters and thus improve their chances of a short stay with us at HSSA. Hand in Paw Kid’s Club Feral Cat Communities Workshop

HSSA Main Campus 635 W Roger Rd, Tucson, AZ, United States

The Hand in Paw Kid’s Club is getting a crash course in feral cat communities! Feral cats are often confused with stray cats, but at this event we will learn why that is not the case. Tucson is home to many feral cats and has a community to support them.
We will learn about what it means to be feral, how it affects our community and environment, and why they are supported within our county. Additionally, we will also learn what we as community members can do to support them, such as creating safe houses and food receptacles for them and “Trap, Neuter, Return”.
The fee for this event is $10 for HIP members and $15 for non-members. This event will take place in the Education Center at HSSA’s new campus located at 635 W Roger Rd.

Adopt Love Adopt Local

Tucson Expo Center

More than 30,000 pets enter our local shelters each year, but sadly all may not find a new home. Adopt Love Adopt Local, an initiative of the Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare (PAAW), aims to solve this issue by connecting adopters with a collaboration of local shelters and rescues to increase adoptions and awareness. Through research, education, and an annual, community-wide adoption event we intend for every displaced companion pet in our community, to have a happy, forever home.

Adopt Love Adopt Local is a one-day mega-adoption animal fair designed to help hundreds of our community’s homeless pets find their forever homes.

Tucson Sugar Skulls Game benefitting homeless pets

Tucson Convention Center 260 S Church Ave, Tucson, AZ

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is teaming up with Tucson's newest sports entertainment extravaganza, Tucson Sugar Skulls indoor football, for a "bring your dogs to the game!" event on Sunday, April 14th. Kickoff is at 3pm at the Tucson Arena downtown - but the fun starts well before that!

The Tucson Sugar Skulls return to the "boneyard" at the TCC arena for the third home game of their inaugural season this coming Sunday, April 14th against in-state rivals the Arizona Rattlers for a key Indoor Football League matchup. The fun starts at 1pm with an outdoor tailgate and community celebration featuring your Humane Society of Southern Arizona, onsite with wonderful adoptable dogs from 1 to 3pm.

Already have a dog? GREAT - bring them to the game! For just a $5 doggie ticket (available only at the TCC box office) you can bring your leashed and well-behaved canine pal to the Sugar Skulls game with you! And that $5 is being collected and donated to the Humane Society so we can continue our great programs for pets in our community.
