Pet VIP Therapy & Visitation

Become a Pet VIP Therapy Team

Our Pet VIP Therapy Program brings the healing power of pets to thousands of people in southern Arizona every year. After receiving training and therapy pet certification with the Humane Society of Southern Arizonapet-owner teams volunteer therapeutic support in schools, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and more.

Volunteers are the heart of the Pet VIP Therapy program. Join us to serve your community with your pet at your side!

As a Pet VIP team, you and your pet will make regular therapy visits to facilities and events of your choosing. Together, you’ll provide comfort and company to people facing life’s challenges.

Eligibility

Volunteer handlers must

  • Own the pet or have written permissions from the owner of the pet.
  • Had the pet in their care for at least 6 months.
  • Be at least 15 years of age. Pet VIP volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian for all trainings and therapeutic visits.
  • Be attentive, adaptable, friendly, and assertive.
  • Be able to handle the pet in a way that is safe and predictable.
  • Commit to 24 volunteer visits a year.

We welcome many kinds of pets to participate in the Pet VIP therapy program, from dogs and cats to miniature horses.

Eligible pets must:

  • Have a calm temperament.
  • Not be a service animal. Service animals are trained to focus on the individual they assist, which conflicts with the goals for a therapy pet.
  • Be comfortable interacting with people.
  • Be at least 1 year old.
  • Be spayed/neutered, unless there is an issue due to health or species.
  • Stay up to date on vaccines.
  • Be healthy so as not to pose risks to the public. Pets should be free of parasites, viruses, etc. Cats should wear gel nail caps or mittens to prevent scratches.
  • Be housebroken or diaper trained.
  • Be easily handled. For dogs, we expect basic obedience training. For other pets, you must be able to safely control your pets’ movement.

How to Join Us

To become a Pet VIP volunteer team, you and your pet must complete a six-week training and certification process, which we run four times a year. The schedule is listed below. Before signing up, please check that you can attend all the trainings in your session.

We collect a $15 fee for the aptitude test and a $100 fee for certification, which also covers the cost of a volunteer shirt, ID badge, and a vest for your animal. If you'd like to certify a second handler or animal, it will be an increase of $25 per animal/handler.

Get started by emailing petvip@hssaz.org to express your interest!

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Pet VIP therapy teams can practice Animal Assisted Activities (AAA), Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT), Animal Assisted Education (AAE) and Animal Assisted Psychotherapy (AAP).

We can help you determine which program is right for you and your pet.

  • AAA is a general meet-and-greet with the public.
  • In AAT, your animal assists a physical/occupational therapist in meeting goals that are important to a patient’s recovery.
  • AAE is goal-directed intervention to promote improvement in cognitive functioning of the person(s) involved where a specially trained pet-handler team is an integral part of the educational process.
  • In AAP, a mental health professional incorporates an animal into their work with a client. The professional develops interventions tailored to the client’s treatment goals.
