How to Join Us
To become a Pet VIP volunteer team, you and your pet must complete a six-week training and certification process, which we run four times a year. The schedule is listed below. Before signing up, please check that you can attend all the trainings in your session.
We collect a $15 fee for the aptitude test and a $100 fee for certification, which also covers the cost of a volunteer shirt, ID badge, and a vest for your animal. If you'd like to certify a second handler or animal, it will be an increase of $25 per animal/handler.
Get started by emailing petvip@hssaz.org to express your interest!

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Pet VIP therapy teams can practice Animal Assisted Activities (AAA), Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT), Animal Assisted Education (AAE) and Animal Assisted Psychotherapy (AAP).
We can help you determine which program is right for you and your pet.
- AAA is a general meet-and-greet with the public.
- In AAT, your animal assists a physical/occupational therapist in meeting goals that are important to a patient’s recovery.
- AAE is goal-directed intervention to promote improvement in cognitive functioning of the person(s) involved where a specially trained pet-handler team is an integral part of the educational process.
- In AAP, a mental health professional incorporates an animal into their work with a client. The professional develops interventions tailored to the client’s treatment goals.
