Community Outreach & Engagement

Knowledge builds a better future

At the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), we believe that education and outreach are powerful tools to create a compassionate, pet-friendly community. Our programs nurture the human-animal bond and inspire children and adults alike to embrace kindness, responsibility, and empathy. Through a range of engaging services, we aim to strengthen connections between people and pets while addressing the challenges facing animals in our community

Programs and Services

Animal Cruelty Prevention

HSSA is a proud founding member of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona. We are committed to combating animal cruelty through education and enforcement. Court-Mandated Animal Cruelty Education: We offer classes for individuals cited for neglect or mistreatment of animals, helping them learn responsible pet care.

Dog Training

Building well-behaved and happy canine companions is at the heart of our Good Dog Training Academy.

  • Fear-Free Training: Dogs are guided by certified trainers to develop life skills, including socialization, basic manners, and behavior modification.
  • Safety Classes: Protect your pet by enrolling in our rattlesnake avoidance and poisonous toad avoidance classes.

Therapy Dogs

HSSA provides opportunities to train and work with therapy dogs, bringing comfort and support to our community.

  • Therapy Dog Training: Open to the public, this program helps dogs develop the skills needed to provide emotional support.
  • Visitation Programs: Volunteers and their therapy dogs visit schools, hospitals, and community facilities to uplift spirits.
  • Specialty Crisis Dogs: Trained to provide support during crisis situations, these dogs bring a unique kind of healing.

Pet Food Assistance

No one should have to choose between their well-being and their pet's care. This service ensures families in need can provide food for their pets, preventing unnecessary surrenders.

Help with Pet-Friendly Housing

Finding housing with pets can be challenging. Our resources connect pet owners with housing solutions that welcome furry family members.

Youth Programs

Our youth programs encourage the next generation to develop a love for animals and a sense of responsibility.

  • Field Trips and Community Service: Engage students with hands-on learning at HSSA.
  • Youth Service Groups: Opportunities for kids to contribute to animal welfare while building teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Internship Opportunities: Older kids and teens can gain valuable experience in animal care and advocacy.

Service Groups

Have a group eager to give back? Whether you're part of a company, school, or club, we can coordinate service projects tailored to your interests and abilities.
