- About Us
It’s a word that encompasses so much. Selflessness. Philanthropy. Generosity. Support. Love.
Your support helps the Humane Society of Southern Arizona care for the homeless pets we see every day. You help us offer programs to help make our community the best place for pets. Your generosity directly serves pets and the people who love them.
The HSSA is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. That means we don’t get funding from the government, or a national humane organization. We get funding from the selfless, generous, philanthropic supporters in our community like you, who love pets and want to help them.
At the HSSA, we offer a range of opportunities for you to show your support financially, from monthly giving and memberships to remembering us in your will. Donations to our general fund allow us to put the money where it is most needed. Give to a specific fund, and you can decide how your donation helps pets. You can even give in memory or tribute of a favorite two- or four-legged friend.
Want your money to go a specific pet? Our Forever Home program lets you sponsor a dog, cat or litter and help cover some of the cost of their care while they are here. And to help him find that Forever Home, his adoption fee will be half price with your sponsorship.
We also offer the opportunity for you to give items of value that help us care for our pets every day. Whether it is something off our wish list, or a gently used vehicle you no longer need, we’ll make sure it gets put to good use!
Thank you for your selflessness. Your generosity. Your love.
We, and all the pets in our care, truly appreciate it.

“Powerful” is how we describe your gift to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona!
Your generous gift makes it possible for pets to find homes, receive the care they need to stop pet overpopulation, and recover from illness, abuse and neglect. Thank you for partnering with us to help pets and the people who love them in our community. We greatly appreciate your continued support and the powerful impact it has on pets and families. As the oldest and largest nonprofit animal welfare organization in Southern Arizona, we rely 100 percent on community support – you are truly saving lives!
All donations go to the HSSA general fund, allowing us to focus our energy on what needs help the most: the pets in our care. We appreciate your belief and support in the work that we do. If you would prefer to designate your gift to a particular area, there are a few designated funds that allow you to target your donation more specifically. These targeted funds are used only for these specific purposes and we respect your designation for that area of need.
Now that is powerful!
There are the many ways you can support the Humane Society of Southern Arizona!
At the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, we’re dedicated to providing for the pet population of our community in three amazing ways: Shelter & Placement, Prevention, and Education & Outreach. We don’t receive taxpayer dollars and rely on the generosity of our loyal supporters like you.
Employer Matching Gifts offer a simple, easy way to double (and sometimes triple) your contribution in support of HSSA’s programs.
Many corporations match employee donations (or the tax deductible component of your membership) to our organization.
If you volunteer with us, your employer may also provide us with a grant as a way to recognize your ongoing support.

Choose How Your Money is Used
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona relies on the generous support of our donors to help us care for the community’s homeless pets. Our programs that educate the public, provide services for pets, care for abused or sick animals and fight pet overpopulation, are always in need of continued funding.

Second Chance Fund
The HSSA has set up a specific fund to cover costs of care for pets with extraordinary needs. The following examples are, unfortunately, common occurrences that we need your help to deal with:
We receive pets who have been neglected, tortured, burned and battered. With proper medical attention, nurturing and care, these pets are able to overcome their fear and become wonderful companions. In fact, our experience has proven, with proper care these cats and dogs are some of the most loyal pets.
Special Medical Needs
We frequently receive animals that require surgery or special medical care that lies outside the purview of our onsite clinic. Without funding for surgery (such as fixing a broken limb, or correcting a painful home “ear crop job”), these pets cannot go to a new home. We must rely on an outside veterinarian.
Pets from Homes of Domestic Violence
Research has proven that an abuser is an abuser – if he/she abuses people, then most likely they include animals as their targets. Oftentimes, an abused spouse will stay to protect a loved pet. This program allows us to set up special safe havens for the animal victims of domestic violence. A secure boarding facility assumes responsibility for the animal(s) until such time as the home is a safe environment for all the victims.
Trap Neuter Return Fund
Donate to our Trap Neuter Return program to help lessen the number of feral cats in our community. Learn more about our important spay/neuter program for feral cats.
Facilities Improvement Fund
Many parts of our facility are old and the entire campus needs constant maintenance for the care of our animals.
Let Someone Know You’re Thinking of Them
Our friends and loved ones inspire us, change our lives, make us better people.

Leave a Legacy
Your support of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona can continue through planned giving. Including the HSSA in your will or trust will ensure that your estate is used in the way you prefer, and is not distributed by the state! When you plan for your future, plan for the pets’ futures, too.
Will or Living Trust Gifts
Make a lasting difference. Remember your beloved pet through an estate gift to help homeless pets. Consider naming HSSA as the beneficiary of your Will or Trust, or through a gift of stocks, real estate or IRAs. We encourage you to consult an attorney to discuss the benefits of establishing a living trust or will.
Ann loved animals and had cats throughout her life as companions. She was unable to donate during her lifetime due to limited resources but wanted to remember her cherished cats by helping other animals in need. Ann accomplished her wish by naming the Humane Society of Southern Arizona as the beneficiary in her will. Through her generosity, HSSA’s sustainability is guaranteed for years to come.
Charitable gifts made by bequest are not taxed as part of your estate.
There are several ways to make a bequest to the HSSA
“I hereby give and bequeath to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, a nonprofit Arizona corporation located at 3450 N. Kelvin Boulevard, Tucson, Arizona, 85716, Tax I.D. #86-0112798, the sum of $______________ to be used for its general purposes.”
- For a gift other than cash, simply describe the assets.
- For a residuary bequest, the wording may be:
“I hereby give and bequeath to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, a nonprofit Arizona corporation located at 3450 N. Kelvin Boulevard, Tucson, Arizona, 85716, Tax I.D. #86-0112798, all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general purposes.”
- For a gift of less than 100% of the rest, residue and remainder of the estate, merely delete "all" and state the fraction.
Gifts earmarked for our general purposes permit us to use the funds where they are most needed. If you wish to restrict your bequest to a particular project, we’ll be happy to talk with you further about how your wishes can best be accomplished.
For more information, call 321-3704, ext. 116 or 117.

Gifts that Provide you with Income for Life
Giving options include a Charitable Gift Annuity and Charitable Remainder Trusts.
The Charitable Gift Annuity
The Charitable Gift Annuity offers you a way to make a significant gift to the HSSA while continuing to provide for your own future. In exchange for a gift of cash, securities or other assets, the HSSA agrees to pay one or two people — chosen by you — a fixed sum of money each year for life. The older these people are at the time of your gift, the greater the amount of annual income. A portion of each payment is tax-free, and if you give an asset that has grown in value since you purchased it, you will pay capital gains tax on only part of the appreciation.
Here’s an Example
If you and your spouse name yourselves as beneficiaries of a gift annuity to the HSSA, your benefits include the following: you will receive fixed payments in quarterly installments for life, a portion of which will be tax-free; you will qualify for a federal income tax deduction (the amount may vary modestly depending on the timing of your gift) in the year you make the gift; your estate may enjoy reduced probate costs and estate taxes; you will provide generous support to the HSSA. We will be glad to provide you with specific calculations that are based on your own personal interests and financial situation.
There are two types of charitable remainder trusts: the Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust and the Charitable Remainder Unitrust. These gift plans are not as complicated as they sound. Essentially, federal law allows you to put a charitable gift of cash, securities, or other assets into a trust. These assets are invested to generate income, which is paid annually to you and the beneficiaries you choose. When the last beneficiary dies, the principal that’s left in the trust — the remainder — comes to the HSSA.
More specifically: You transfer a gift of cash, securities, real estate, or other assets into a trust that can be managed by the HSSA or financial trustee of your choice; the trustee invests these assets and pays income for life* to the one or more people you choose, such as your spouse, children, or grandchildren; you take a federal income tax deduction in the year you make the gift; upon the death of your last named beneficiary, the assets remaining in the trust go to the HSSA to be used for the purpose you designate; your loved ones may have reduced probate costs and estate taxes; you will provide generous support to the HSSA.
* With an annuity trust, your annual income is a fixed dollar amount, based on a percentage of your initial gift. With a unitrust, your annual income is a variable dollar amount, based on a percentage of the trust’s value as determined each year. For more information, please call 520-321-3704, ext. 116 or 117.

Life Insurance Gifts
Using life insurance to make a gift to the HSSA to help pets in southern Arizona may allow you to make a larger gift than you thought possible.
Using life insurance to make a gift to the HSSA to help animals may allow you to make a larger gift than you thought possible.
As you grow older, the need for protection from life insurance often diminishes. Your policy has served its original purpose — protecting your loved ones in the event of your death — and can now be used in other ways; making a charitable gift is one of these ways.
To donate life insurance:
By assigning ownership of your policy to the HSSA, you are eligible to claim a deduction for income tax purposes. The deduction is based on the present value or the cash surrender value of the policy, whichever is less, up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any excess of that amount can be carried over and deducted for five additional years, within the limitations of the law.
You can also opt to continue paying premiums, name the HSSA as beneficiary, and take a charitable tax deduction for the premiums you pay. If you purchase a new policy and name the HSSA as owner and beneficiary, you can take a tax deduction for the premiums you pay, and the value of the policy will be removed from your estate at your death, reducing your estate taxes.
For more information, call 520-321-3704, ext. 116 or 117.

Guardian Angel Program
Let the HSSA care for your pet when you no longer can.
Plan for your pet’s future and the future of pets in our community. Pets add so much to our lives and give us joy, loyalty and unconditional love. When planning for the disbursement of estates, it is vital to allow for the care and protection of your pets. Only you can make the proper decisions concerning your pet’s needs. Failing to plan may put your pet at risk in the future – they not only lose you, but your pet may lose the opportunity to live out its natural life in a loving and caring home.
The HSSA Offers You Peace of Mind
The HSSA’s Guardian Angel Program gives you the peace of mind that your beloved pet will be cared for and loved. It allows you to provide for your pets in your planned giving in a way that ensures he will find a loving, warm, and safe home after your passing. The HSSA selects new homes – based on criteria you provide – and in certain cases can monitor your pets throughout their lifetime.
You can also feel good that your decision to enroll your pet in Guardian Angel not only helps her, but also the thousands of homeless pets we see each year.
How it Works
The pet owner arranges a gift to The Humane Society of Southern Arizona in an estate plan that takes effect upon death.
The Pet Owner selects one of the following life care options:
Note: This program is designed to take effect upon death. In the case of temporary hospitalization or other short or long term situations, it is the responsibility of the pet owner to find temporary care for their pets.
By naming the Humane Society of Southern Arizona as part of the Guardian Angel program you are guaranteed loving, attentive care for your pet when you are no longer here to provide care yourself. You have the peace of mind of knowing that your pet won’t become an innocent victim of someone’s inability, unwillingness, negligence or abuse.
If you need more information, would like to talk to us, or have a Guardian Angel Packet sent to you by mail, please call Randy Peterson at email@example.com or (520) 321-3704, ext 116.
